MWC 2014

So now that the hype of MWC has died down. It in effect became a showdown between the current Kings Samsung and the new kids on the block Sony.

We have learnt that Samsung can sell water to a well, that much is said. According to some carriers, they are reporting 100000 pre orders.

Let’s get back to the nitty gritty, not only have Samsung raised the bar, but have they done enough to stop their rivals one upping them in the flagship stakes. Simply No.

The Galacy Note 3 was an exceptional device and I think Samsung may have put too much time and effort into that, because S5 to the S4 feels like an incremental update (minus gimmicky software).

I believe Sony with Xperia Z2 would have stolen the show, if they also had not just updated the Z1 ( which is a mere 6months old).

Through the Z2, Sony have managed to remove their biggest flaw, which is their screen. The bezels are down and it is looking like a very promising device. One underlying issue with Sony is that their flagship cycle will frustrate some people.

I believe they can take a lead from Samsung/HTC in that respect and have an annual update, which would reduce the anguish and disgruntled consumers.

Why I believe the Z2 stole the show was, they managed to out Samsung samsung and now they lead on the Spec sheet. Only weakness being slightly underclocked Snapdragon 801 Soc.

The Z2 is waterproof  (ip58) whereas S5 is water resistant.(ip67)

Larger Screen

Larger Battery Life

3gb Ram vs 2gb ram

Less Saturated screen (IPS LCD vs AMOLED)

Also the design is an absolute masterpiece, where as Samsung have managed to make the S5 even more tackier with the perforated back plate.

With Samsung fliundering with their aesthetics ( their sales/interest show otherwise), will it allow Sony to make a dash to number 1, or will it allow the former Android Kings HTC to take their throne back.

HTC will release the new HTC One on March 25th, everyone will be eagerly anticipating it.

LG have yet to release the G3 and Huawei didn’t follow through with the promise of the Ascend P7. These should be interesting products and could be worth an outside bet to make an inroad into Samsung and the domination they currently have with the Galaxy S range.

Data and Datascapes

So we enter the world of data, what is data… Data – Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.

So why are we so touchy about data and our data trail, well to be honest, the data itself is nothing we should be concerned about it’s what happens when the companies convert it into information and use it, and they can do anything with that data as they’ve already made us agree to it, this is usual in the privacy policy which is a million words long in size 1 font, and we can’t use their software if we don’t agree to the privacy policy, so it becomes a bit of a catch 22 situation.

We should be worried about data mining, which sounds pretty harmless but it’s how these companies see us and asses what type of people we are, for instance we do our shopping in Tescos, the clubcard/loyalty scheme on offer allows them to find out what our general interests are and what we frequently purchase, so at the end of the month Tescos send us vouchers for specific products.

The problem with data mining comes from the issues with privacy where people find it as a way of intruding with their life by using on-line character traits, another problems lies the way that companies are now obtaining people data to store and sell them on databases, thus increasing the chances of  untrustworthy people gaining access to your data.

Datascaping is when data has been gathered and processed and finally presented in a visual manner using the helps graphs and maps etc, this then shows if certain activities have taken place.

This website here helps data mining from twitter, and thus allows targeted ads.

This website allows you to track your navigation and where you have been, namely because its fascinating to be able to track where you’ve been walking all day.

Here is a map to show where all the people who have been using have walked to.

Its quite fascinating but ultimately quite worrying how easy it is for people to get hold of your information, what’s most worrying is half the time you don’t know what’s going on with YOUR data. Surely there should be an opt out method but alas we are too important a commodity, hence the completely ridiculous floatation value of Facebook which works out at roughly $100 billion dollars. Now that the money is going into public investors, there’s going to be outside influence to turn that data into larger profits so shareholders get larger dividends. At the end of the day data is big business and it’s only going to get worse, so what I’m trying to say is we just got to get used to it.

Hitler Parody

The final blog of this  semester is in regards to our Hitler parady,  I thoroughly enjoyed making it as it allowed us to have a free rein  on a topic we enjoyed, it allowed us a specified topic and it was highly enjoyable task. We decided to go for a twitter them namely because we have been using twitter all semester and it allowed us to show the usage and how celebrities and people utilise social media to get there voice across. It also shows the dark side of it when someone becomes obsessive and possessive they start to get the wrong idea, it could lead to to stalkerish behavious and it makes it easy for people to start tracking down and locating people.

If someone is skilled enough you can use an IP address to locate an address and when you update a status on Facebook it shows where you updated it from, little info bits like this make it extremely dangerous and it could be used as evidence if needs be.  Hitler theme is a very popular theme running on you tube and it makes it an extremely fun editing because you can say anything and it works.

Twitter and faceboook have exploded and have a combined user base of 1.1 billion meaning they have a vast reach and various other pcompanies now utilise this to get there message across and they also use it to advertise there products, Kim Kardashian is now paid roughly $ 10,000 http: to sponsor a product. It saves and costs for a a company because they can immediately target their target audience without having to spend loads on various costs such as studio time etc.

Facebook is now a huge money earner namely because the amount of data they store and the amount of information the y garner from our personal info, it allows other companies to tap into their knowledge and utilise this power. Without us their is no multi-billlion dollar organistion and they are now starting to challenge the current giants of the ad world Google.

Twitter bosses up until recently had no idea how to make money from their product and now they started to use adsense and various other tools to target specific users.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/pda/2010/mar/29/twitter-making-money

So all in all twitter Facebook are great ways of keeping in touch and communicating with one another, it allows all of its clients a decent amount of privacy without restricting their product usage but it is still dangerous to talk and speak to strangers, and never ever believe what a celebrity has to say they’re all money hungry and grabbing fiends,  and are only on it for themselves.
